Background

Whiting Petroleum Corp. operates oil and gas fields with assets in North Dakota, Montana, and Colorado. Ordinary shares are listed on the NYSE (WLL) exchange. The company takes its name from founder Kenneth Whiting.

Whiting was founded in 1980 and merged with Keba Oil & Gas in 1983 to become a public company. Alliant Energy acquired the company in 1992. Alliant completed a public offering of Whiting in 2003 and divested its remaining shares in 2008. The company acquired Kodiak Oil & Gas in 2014. Whiting filed for Chapter 11 restructuring in 2020 and hired Lynn Peterson as CEO as the company exited bankruptcy. In July 2021, Whiting agreed to acquire assets in Mountrail County from a undisclosed operator for $271 million.
