SM Energy Co. operates exploration and production fields. Ordinary shares are listed on the NYSE (SM) exchange. SM is an abbreviation for St. Mary, a parish in Louisiana where the company originated.

St. Mary Parish Land was founded in 1908 to invest in Louisiana real estate. St. Mary combined with Tidal Wave Land in 1933. The company leased land to Texaco in 1938 in its first oil and gas operation. The company moved its headquarters from Duluth, Minnesota to Denver, Colorado in 1966.

The company made an investment in Anderman-Smith Operating in 1978 and Nance Petroleum in 1991. St. Mary Land & Exploration went public in 1992 and acquired the oil and gas division of TL James. In 1995, the company acquired the remaining shares in Anderman-Smith. The company acquired Nance Petroleum in 1999 and changed its name to SM Energy in 2010. In 2014, Rock Oil was acquired from Riverstone.
