Background

Pioneer Natural Resources Co. operates oil and gas fields as well as pipelines, sand, and water gathering infrastructure with assets in Texas. Common shares are listed on the NYSE (PXD) exchange.

Petroleum Exploration Inc. (PEI) was founded by Thomas Boone Pickens in 1956, and Parker & Parsley Petroleum was formed in 1962 by Howard Parker and Joe Parsley. PEI was renamed Mesa Petroleum in 1964 prior to a public offering. Mesa acquired the original Pioneer in 1985. Pioneer Natural Resources was created in 1997 through the combination of Parker & Parsely and Mesa. The group acquired Evergreen Resources in 2004. Carmeuse Industrial Sands was acquired in 2012 and renamed Premier Silica. Pioneer Water Management was formed in 2014.

DoublePoint Energy was formed in 2018 through the combination of assets from Double Eagle Energy III and FourPoint Energy and is managed by Double Eagle's Cody Campbell and John Sellers. In May 2021, Pioneer acquired DoublePoint Energy in a cash and stock transaction valued at $6.2 billion.
