Devon was founded in 1971 by John and Larry Nichols. The company acquired Hondo Oil & Gas in 1992 and Kerr-McGee's North American onshore oil and gas properties in 1996. The company acquired Northstar Energy in 1998, PennzEnergy in 1999, Sante Fe Snyder in 2000, and Anderson Exploration in 2001. Mitchell Energy & Development was acquired in 2002, and Ocean Energy was acquired in 2003. Chief Oil & Gas was acquired in 2006. In 2011, the company completed the sale of its offshore and international assets to focus on North American onshore production.
