Caterpillar

Background

Caterpillar Inc. manufactures earth moving equipment, agricultural equipment, and heavy engines. Operations are organized into four business units: Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Energy & Transportation, and Financial Products. Ordinary shares are listed on the NYSE (CAT) exchange. The company takes its name from the legacy steam-powered tractors that were observed to crawl like a caterpillar.

Holt Caterpillar was incorporated in 1909 as a subsidiary of Holt Manufacturing. Holt and CL Best Tractor merged in 1925 to form California-based Caterpillar Tractor. The company acquired Trackson in 1951, Towmotor in 1965, and the Solar and Tubomach divisions of International Harvester in 1981. The company reorganized in 1986 and the name shortened to Caterpillar. In 2006, Progress Rail Services was acquired. Electro-Motive Diesel and MWM were acquired in 2010. Bucyrus International and Pyroban were added in 2011.
