Callon Petroleum Co. operates exploration and production fields. Common shares are listed on the NYSE (CPE) exchange. The company takes its name from founder John S. Callon.

Callon Oil & Gas was founded in 1950 in Mississippi and renamed Callon Petroleum in 1962. The company merged with Pacific Energy in 1974 and listed publicly. The Callon family took the company private again in 1988. Carrizo Oil & Gas was founded in 1993, and Callon went public again in 1994. A Houston office was opened in 2001 to house technical staff, and the company moved its headquarters there in early 2019. Callon acquired Carrizo in 2019.
