Background

Brigham Exploration Co. LLC operates exploration and production fields. The company operates via two subsidiaries: frac sand supplier Atlas Sand and mineral rights buyer Brigham Minerals. The company takes its name from founder Bud Brigham. Brigham Minerals is publicly held with shares listed on the NYSE (MNRL) exchange.

Brigham Exploration was founded in 1990 and received funding from General Atlantic in 1992. The company completed an initial public offering in 1997 and eventually sold to Statoil in 2011. Following the sale, Bud founded family office Anthem Ventures which funded Brigham Resources in 2012 in partnership with Warburg Pincus as well as Brigham Minerals. Brigham Resources was sold to Diamondback Energy in 2017, and a new Brigham Exploration was formed as a holding company for Atlas Sand and Brigham Minerals. Brigham Minerals completed a public offering in 2019.
