The group is organized into four divisions: Private Equity, Real Estate, Hedge Fund Solutions, and Credit. Common shares are listed on the NYSE (BX) exchange. The name Blackstone is a cryptogram derived from the names of founders Peterson and Schwarzman.

Blackstone was founded in 1985 by Peter Peterson and Stephen Schwarzman. The company completed an initial public offering in 2007 and acquired GSO Capital Partners in 2008. GSO acquired Harbourmaster Capital in 2012.
